Under the effect of the ban, companies will not be allowed to sell chips made using US tech to Huawei. Companies that wish to do so will have to apply for a special license. According to Reuters, MediaTek has applied for said special license. In a statement, the company said that it will respect the ban, which prompted the application for the license, but didn’t elaborate more.
MediaTek may be among the hardest hit by the ban. After all, a fair number of Huawei devices run chips made by the company. It is not alone though, as fellow Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC, which makes the Kirin chips used by Huawei flagship devices will also be affected. This has prompted prior reports of the Huawei Mate 40 being the last phone to be powered by Kirin chips. At the very least, MediaTek is requesting for the license continue doing business with the Chinese tech giant. TSMC, on the other hand, doesn’t plan to ship wafers after 15 September.
