Naturally, this means that PLUS users will soon be able to utilize the TnG eWallet to pay for their tolls via the digital wallet’s PayDirect feature. Coordinated with the help from the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Works, and Malaysian Highway Authority, the implementation will first take place on the company’s open toll system plazas.

By definition, the open toll system requires users to pay a fixed amount at the toll booths while the closed toll system utilizes transit ticket in which the toll payment only takes place at the exit booth. According to PLUS, it operates 11 open toll system plazas in total, together with 83 closed toll system plazas throughout Peninsular Malaysia. The company has also stated that the implementation of the RFID system will take place on 1 January 2020. In a media briefing last week, the Managing Director of PLUS, Azman Ismail has revealed that the government is planning to make the RFID implementation as mandatory at all open toll system plazas by the said date; not just those that are being operated by PLUS.

As for PLUS closed toll system plazas, they will be fitted with RFID system by 1 April 2020. Both PLUS and CIMB Group guaranteed that the RFID implementation will not cause any downtime to the existing TnG card, SmartTAG, or PayDirec system, so let’s hope it will really stay that way.
