The patent was filed at the end of June 2019 with the Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial (INPI) of Brazil. It is still unclear if this cartridge is indeed for an upcoming handheld device, or for something else entirely.
A similar episode occurred last year, with Sony being granted a patent for a cartridge. It was widely believed to be for a new handheld. Shortly after, the company announced a toy that looks exactly like what the document describes. It was called the Sony Toio, and was exclusive to Japan. The person who submitted this patent is credited as Yujin Morisawa. This happens to be the same person that submitted the previous one for the toy. With all this in mind, it’s difficult to be optimistic that this new patent is indeed one for the PS Vita’s successor. But who knows?
